The OPP has developed a new product that represents a step forward in fishing sustainability with the recovery of by-products from the sea.

The Palamós Fish Producers’ Organisation has launched an innovative project that seeks to reduce food waste through the recovery of waste generated in the processing of fish and seafood. In line with the new Catalan Food Safety Plan 2022/2026, this project transforms fish by-products into a fish concentrate with culinary and nutritional applications.

The project responds to one of the great challenges facing the fishing industry: to give a second life to the waste generated in the cleaning and preparation of fish. OPP-91, through its fish workshop, already distributes the product to hospitals, schools and social centres in the region. Now, with this initiative, the by-products will be converted into a stable concentrate at room temperature, ideal for soups, sauces and stews. The project addresses one of the major challenges facing the fisheries sector: giving a second life to waste from fish cleaning and preparation.

With a clear innovative component, this project promotes sustainability in the management of marine resources and contributes to the circular economy. It also highlights the active participation of young workers and a female management committed to sustainable development.

Fish concentrate not only reduces waste, but also represents a new range of business opportunities and enriches local gastronomy.

Promoted by the GALP Costa Brava 2024 Grants, this initiative reaffirms the Palamós OPP’s commitment to sustainability, innovation and the responsible management of marine resources.
