This course provides comprehensive training in safety and basic operations for working in the fishing sector, including first aid, survival at sea and fire prevention.

The Palamós Producers’ Organisation (OPP) offers the free course for fishermen.

This course is an excellent opportunity to acquire the necessary skills to work as a sailor fisherman. During the training, topics such as the working environment, daily tasks, manoeuvring, boat maintenance and basic notions about the engine are covered.

Multipurpose Coastal Skipper Training and Certification

Course duration: 1 year (divided in 3 parts)
1º – 19/02 – 27/06
2º – 25/09 – 13/22
3rd – beginning 2025

The training starts on 19 February and will take place at the Palamós Fishermen’s Guild. You have time to register until 29th January.

As a Multipurpose Coastal Skipper you will be able to…

• Command fishing boats up to 24 metres in length between perpendiculars and 400 kW* of effective engine power.
• Dedicate yourself to coastal fishing, littoral or as an auxiliary in aquaculture.
• Navigate up to 60 miles from the coast, outside the baselines defined in accordance with Law 10/1977 of 4 January, on territorial sea and the delimitation of the straight baselines established in Royal Decree 2510/1977 of 5 August.

With this qualification you will be able to bring any fishing boat up to 24m in length.

FISHING SEAFARER

Basic qualification to work as a fisherman or any other on-board activity (passenger ferries, cruise ships, merchant ships, port services…).

1st requirement: To do the Fishing Seafarer Course (over 16 years old, course duration 35 hrs).

Where does it take place? Fishing Nautical School of Catalunya offers courses at each port in conjunction with the Guild of Fishermen. In 2022, there will be a Fishing / Seafarer course in Palamós from 21/10/2022 to 07/11/2022.

2nd requirement: To take the Basic Safety Training Course (over 16 years old, course duration 70 hrs).

Where does it take place? Guild of Fishermen, the Marine Social Institute or private nautical schools. In 2022, a Basic Safety Training Course will be held from 08/11/2022 to 16/12/2022.

Training and certification of the Nautical Fishing School of Catalonia

• Sailor Fishermen (40h)
• Basic Security Training (70h)
• Sanitizing primary production in extractive fishing (2h)

The training, which starts on April 24, will take place in the Fishermen’s Guild of Palamós and includes:

• Practical seamanship sessions on board the boats
• Fishing baptism day
• Two days of Maritime Safety practices at the school’s facilities in the Port of Tarragona
• Possibility of being hired during the summer by one of the boats, with a paid apprentice contract
• Tutoring and accompaniment during training and practices
